Rojelio
Masculine · “Germanic hrod and ger”
Spanish has no sound like the j of John, so every borrowed name that contains one has to be rebuilt. Roger became Rogelio, John became Juan, and the sound simply does not survive the crossing.

The story of Rojelio
A language cannot borrow a sound it does not have; it substitutes the nearest one and reshapes the word around it. Spanish lacks the affricate at the start of the English John and Roger, so names carrying it are rebuilt: Roger became Rogelio with a harsh h and a Latin ending, John became Juan, George became Jorge with a sound that is nothing like the English one. English does the same in reverse, flattening the Spanish rolled r and the j of Juan whenever it borrows. The Germanic elements underneath, fame and spear, arrived in Spain with the Visigoths and again with the Normans, which is why so much of the Spanish name stock is Germanic rather than Latin.
Meaning
Germanic hrod and ger, famous spear
Rogelio is the Spanish form of Roger, from Germanic hrod, fame, and ger, a spear. Rojelio spells the same sound with a j, since Spanish g before e and j are identical in most dialects. The American peak is 1952.

The Cipriano test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rojelio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cipriano climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cipriano's path sketches the road Rojelio is walking now.
Rojelio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
