Rohit

The story of Rohit
The reason it appears in the American record when it does is a change in the law. Until nineteen sixty-five American immigration operated on quotas set by national origin that had been designed in the nineteen-twenties to keep the country's ethnic composition where it was, and they allowed almost nobody from Asia. The act that replaced them removed the quotas and prioritized skills and family reunification instead, and the effect was immediate and enormous. Indian names begin appearing in the birth records within a few years and rise steadily for the next half-century. This one tracks that curve exactly.

Fashion outlook
Rohit sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, easy and completely straightforward for English speakers to say.
- The meaning is concrete and vivid rather than abstract.
- It is a standing name in one of the world's largest naming traditions.
- The h in the middle is often dropped by English speakers.
- Rohan and Mohit sit nearby and get confused with it.
- It reads as clearly foreign in an American classroom, which cuts both ways.
