The story of Roddrick
The name had a second career in English as a literary one. A novel of the seventeen-forties sent a young Scot through the navy, the army, debtors' prison and most of Europe, and its hero's name was Roderick — a picaresque, foul-tempered, extremely popular book that made the name familiar to English readers who had never met a Spaniard or a Goth. Scott used it again eighty years later. That is the usual route for a name of this kind into ordinary use: not descent, but a book somebody read, and then a generation of children named after a character their parents enjoyed.
Meaning
Famous ruler
The Germanic compound joins a word about fame to one about power, and it is the same pair that stands behind Roger and Robert in different combinations. The reading is not disputed.

Fashion outlook
Roddrick sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
