Where it comes from

The story of Rickard

Rickard is the Swedish form of Richard and an old surname in Ireland, where the Normans brought the name. George 'Tex' Rickard, a cowboy, gold-rush saloon keeper and gambler, became the great boxing promoter of the 1920s: his 1921 fight between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier drew the first million-dollar gate, and he built the third Madison Square Garden. English speakers may hear rick in the name, the old word for a stack of hay or grain, which comes from Old English hreac and was in use centuries before Rick became a nickname for Richard.
