The story of Reverie
Rousseau's Rêveries du promeneur solitaire of 1782 fixed the word's calm modern sense, and Debussy's Rêverie of 1890 did the same for music. English borrowed it in the seventeenth century when it still carried the wilder meaning. Reverie entered American given-name use in the 2010s and is in current use.
Meaning
daydream, musing
From the French rêverie, from rêver, 'to dream'. In Old French resverie meant wildness or delirium; the gentle modern sense is a later softening. The origin of rêver itself is genuinely unrecovered — one of the more conspicuous gaps in French etymology.
