The story of Lindsie
The Lindsays crossed into Scotland in the twelfth century and did rather well. By 1398 the head of the house was Earl of Crawford, a title still held today and the oldest earldom in Scotland that has never fallen out of existence — six centuries of the same name at the top of the same list. Along the way the family produced a poet at the court of James V and a line of soldiers, and the surname spread far beyond the household that started it. None of that history explains the spelling on this page. Lindsie is an American respelling made long after the name had stopped being anyone's property, and it treats the closing syllable as a diminutive rather than as the remains of a place name. That is the substitution: where the original ended in a fragment of geography, this one ends the way Jamie and Elsie end.
Meaning
from the district around Lincoln
The root is a place: Lindsey, the northern part of what is now Lincolnshire, once nearly cut off by water and river marsh. A family took the place name, carried it to Scotland, and made it a surname; the surname later became a first name, and the first name later became a girl's name. Each of those steps is documented. The only unsettled part of Lindsie is the last one, the spelling, which no place and no family ever used.

Fashion outlook
Lindsie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A soft, familiar sound with no pronunciation problem attached to it
- Real history behind the name, and a house that carried it for six hundred years
- Common enough to be recognized instantly, rare enough in this spelling to stay individual
- Three spellings compete for the same sound, so the child will spell the name aloud at nearly every introduction and will still be written down wrongly.
- The -ie ending reads as a diminutive, which some adults find sits awkwardly on a professional signature later.
- Anyone looking the name up will find its history under a different spelling.
