Where it comes from

The story of Romee

Romeo meant a Rome-pilgrim in medieval Italian, and Dante gives the word to a character in the Paradiso. Shakespeare's 1597 play changed the sense for every language that read it. Dutch made the feminine Romee, which became common in the Netherlands from the 2000s. It appears in American records in current use.

Meaning

pilgrim to Rome

Through Romeo, from the Italian romeo, 'a pilgrim to Rome', from the Latin Roma. The word named anyone making that journey; Dante uses it that way. Shakespeare's play turned a common noun into a byword for a lover. The etymology is documented and undisputed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Romee went to 98 girls in 2025, but Rome is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 164, which makes it the 796th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,166 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,800 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 16,401 for Romee itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
