Where it comes from

The story of Remmi

Remigius was bishop of Reims at the end of the fifth century and baptized Clovis, the Frankish king, an event that decided which form of Christianity western Europe would take. His cult made the name ordinary in France, where it became Remi and Remy, and French kings were crowned in the cathedral that carries his name for a thousand years afterwards. English-speaking countries took the name up only recently, for girls as much as for boys, and the respellings, Remi, Remmi, Remy and Remie, all arrived at once.

Meaning

oarsman; rower

Latin Remigius, from remex, remigis, a rower or oarsman. The connection is straightforward and has never been seriously disputed.

Remmi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 50 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Remmi went to 28 girls in 2025, but Remi, Remy and Remmy and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 2,474, which makes it the 119th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,639 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 650 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 57,402 for Remmi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, phonetic and easy for a small child to say and write.
  • It carries a documented fifth-century history, which very few short modern names do.
  • It works for a child of either sex without adjustment.
What to consider
  • Remi and Remy are both commoner spellings, so this one will be corrected often.
  • Two pronunciations circulate, REM-ee and ray-MEE, and the spelling supports both.
  • The name is used for boys and girls alike, so paperwork does not always guess right.
