Remy
Feminine · “oarsman”

Remy comes down from Remigius, the Latin name carried by the bishop of Reims who baptized Clovis, king of the Franks, at the turn of the sixth century — a name France has kept in circulation ever since as Rémi and Rémy. Two light syllables, both open, nothing in it for an English speaker to stumble over. It crossed to the United States early last century and has been quietly on the books here every decade since.

The story of Remy
The Latin Remigius belonged most famously to the bishop of Reims who died around 533 and who baptized the Frankish king Clovis, an event that anchored the name in northern France for good. Medieval French wore it down to Rémi and Rémy, and the accent-free Remy is simply what the name looks like once English gets hold of it. Other Catholic countries kept their own versions — Remigio in Italy and Spain, Remigiusz in Poland. In American records the spelling has been used for boys since the early twentieth century, with girls added to the count more recently.
Meaning
oarsman, rower
From Latin Remigius, built on remex, remigis — the man at the oar. The saint's fame in Gaul, not the word itself, is what carried the name forward.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Remy went to 390 girls in 2025, but Remi, Remmi and Remmy and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 2,474, which makes it the 119th most-given girls’ name of the year — 599 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 650 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 4,121 for Remy itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Elissa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Remy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elissa climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elissa's path sketches the road Remy is walking now.
Remy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, five letters, and spelled the way an English speaker hears it — no accent to lose in forms and databases.
- Works for a girl or a boy without either use looking like a mistake, since American records carry both.
- A documented line running back to late-antique Gaul, with living forms in French, Italian, Spanish and Polish.
- Short enough to need no nickname, but Rem and Remmy are there if a child wants one.
- Two pronunciations compete: the English REM-ee and the French ray-MEE. Both are correct for the name, so expect to correct people occasionally, and expect the correction to be easy.
- Rémy Martin cognac and the cooking rat in Pixar's Ratatouille are the two associations most Americans reach for first. Neither is a problem, but you will hear about them.
- The spelling splits three ways — Remy, Remi, Rémy — so the name will sometimes be written back to you in a form you didn't choose.
- It leans toward boys in US records without settling there. A girl named Remy will occasionally be assumed male on paper, which matters more on a class list than in a classroom.
