The story of Reggie
Ragnarok has been mistranslated for centuries. The Old Norse is ragna rok, the fate or destiny of the powers, and a variant reading ragnarokkr, the twilight of the powers, gave Wagner his Gotterdammerung and English its twilight of the gods. The first form is the older and the one the Eddic poems use. The ragna element is the genitive plural of regin, the ruling powers or gods, and it is the same word that stands at the front of Reginald, Reynold, Ronald and Reynard. So an ordinary English name contains a word for the divine council of Germanic religion, and the connection is invisible because the word left the language a thousand years ago. The female use of Reggie in America belongs to the same period as female Bobby, Frankie and Billie, and lasted about two generations.
Meaning
Germanic ragin and wald, counsel and rule
From the Germanic elements ragin, counsel or the counsel of the gods, and wald, rule or power. The Old Norse cognate Rognvaldr gave the Norman Reginald and the English Reynold. Ragin is the same element as the ragna in Ragnarok, usually translated as the fate or doom of the gods. Reggie is the English diminutive and was given to girls in modest numbers in the early twentieth century, peaking in 1908.
