Where it comes from

The story of Reena

The -ina and -ena endings have been productive across Europe for centuries, and every long name in them generates a short form: Sabrina gives Rina, Katrina gives Trina and Rina, Irena gives Rena. That is one route to this spelling. The Hebrew Rina is a separate and genuinely old name, common in modern Israel. The Indian Reena is a third, and became widely used in the mid-twentieth century. American records from 1980 will contain all three and the birth data cannot separate them, which is a common situation for short vowel-framed names.

Meaningscholars disagree

'joy, song' in the Hebrew reading

Hebrew rinnah means a ringing cry, and in practice joy or joyful song — it appears in the Psalms for shouts of gladness. That is a genuine and settled etymology for Rina. The Indian Reena is usually treated as a variant of Rani, 'queen', or as an independent modern name; neither is documented. The English use as a clipping of longer -ina names supplies no meaning of its own. A given Reena may belong to any of the three.

Reena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1980, with 97 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Reena went to 20 girls in 2025, but Rena and Renna are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 123, which makes it the 837th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,080 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,067 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Reena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The ee spelling removes all doubt about the vowel.
  • It is short, soft and easy in English, Hebrew and Hindi alike.
  • Sabrina, Katrina and Irena are all available as longer forms if one is wanted.
What to consider
  • Reena and Rina are the same name and hers will be written the other way.
  • It is close to Rena, Rhina and Nina in sound.
  • Having three unrelated origins means the meaning question needs a qualifier.
