Where it comes from

The story of Raynor

The Normans brought a compact set of Germanic given names to England in 1066 — William, Robert, Richard, Roger, Hugh, Rayner — and within two centuries those names were so common that families needed a second identifier. That is how the English surname system formed, and Rayner, Rainer, Raynor and Reyner are all patronymic surnames from men who bore the given name. The given name itself then faded, displaced by biblical names after the Reformation. Its return is a nineteenth-century American habit: surnames, often from the mother's family, used as first names. The Raynor figures peak in 1911, at the height of that practice.

Meaning

Old Norse "counsel of the gods" and "army"

From Old Norse Ragnarr, from regin, the ruling powers or gods, plus herr or hari, an army. The Frankish cognate Raginhari gave Old French Rainer, which the Normans brought to England as Rayner and Reyner. The same first element regin or ragin appears in Reginald, Reynold, Reynard and Ronald, so Raynor is a close relative of all of them. It is not from English rain, and not from Rayner in the sense of one who rains.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The etymology is settled and unusually grand: the counsel of the gods.
  • Ray is an immediate and completely conventional short form.
  • It is a genuine medieval given name rather than a surname invention.
What to consider
  • It reads as a surname to most Americans, because for six centuries it was one.
  • Rayner, Rainer and Raynor are competing spellings of the same name.
  • It is rare enough in the United States that it will always need spelling out.
