Rapheal
Masculine · “God heals”
Rapheal has two letters in the wrong order, and the name underneath belongs to the most companionable figure in scripture. Raphael spends an entire book traveling in disguise as a young man called Azarias, hiring himself out as a guide, giving practical advice about fish, and only revealing what he is on the last page. No other angel in the Bible does anything so ordinary for so long.

The story of Rapheal
The book of Tobit is a domestic comedy with an angel in it. A blind old man sends his son on a journey to collect a debt; the son hires a traveling companion who is an angel in disguise but does not say so; there is a fish, a dog that comes along for no stated reason and is never explained, a marriage, a cure, and a scene at the end where the companion tells them who he is and they fall over. It is one of the very few pieces of ancient religious literature that is genuinely funny. The painter who carried the name has an epitaph in the Pantheon claiming that nature feared to be outdone by him while he lived and feared to die with him when he went, which is the kind of thing that gets written when a man dies at thirty-seven and everybody is upset.
Meaning
God heals
A Hebrew sentence-name joining a verb about healing with the standard element for God, and the reading is settled. It fits the character: in the book he appears in, the healing is his entire function, applied to a blind man and to a young woman whose previous marriages have all ended badly. The transposed letters in this spelling change nothing about the sense.
How the name formed

RAF-ee-el
Three syllables with the stress on the first in English, and on the last in Spanish and French. The ph is a Greek convention for a Hebrew sound and is said as an f, which is why the Spanish spelling drops it entirely.

Fashion outlook
Rapheal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a genuinely good story that almost nobody knows.
- It is used across Spanish, Italian, French and Hebrew-speaking families with small changes.
- Rafa and Raph are two very different short forms and both are current.
- The letters are transposed and every reader who notices will assume an error.
- Raphael and Rafael are both far commoner and this spelling will be converted into one of them.
- The stress falls differently in English and in Spanish, which a bilingual family will have to settle.
