The story of Randolf
The wolf element was chosen because a wolf was admirable — tenacious, dangerous, loyal to its own — and it appears in the names of kings, saints and bishops without anybody flinching. What happened to Adolf after 1945 is one of the clearest cases in the record of a name dying in a single decade across many countries at once. The other wolf names survived, slightly dimmed. Randolph is still given; Rudolph now belongs to a reindeer; and Adolf is effectively gone from the whole of Europe.
Meaning
shield-wolf
The compound joins a word for the rim of a shield to the word for a wolf, which is a fair sample of how Germanic names were built: two things from the world of fighting, put together for the sound and the connotation rather than for any literal sense. This spelling writes the final sound with an f rather than the ph that English inherited from a Latinized form.
How the name formed
- Germanic words for a shield rim and a wolf
- the compound spreads across northern Europe
- Latin adds a ph spelling that English keeps
- Randolf writes the sound with an f
- an American peak in the 1950s

Fashion outlook
Randolf sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
