The story of Randol
Ranulf Flambard, the Norman bishop who ran William Rufus's treasury, was the first prisoner held in the Tower of London; he had a rope smuggled in inside a cask of wine, got his guards drunk and climbed down the wall. Centuries later, A. Philip Randolph built the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters into the first successful Black labor union, threatened a march on Washington that won a wartime order against discrimination, and directed the great march of a generation later. Randol is a spelling from the same Randulf line.
