Raeanna
Feminine · “ewe”
Rachel is a shepherd. The first time she appears she is bringing her father's sheep to a well, and her name is the ordinary Hebrew word for a ewe — not a metaphor, not a poetic epithet, just the animal she was standing next to. Rae is what four thousand years and one American century did to it.

The story of Raeanna
Genesis is full of pastoral names because it is about pastoralists: Rachel is a ewe, Leah is probably a cow, and the men are named for what happened at their birth. Rachel's own story keeps her near the animals — the well, the flocks, the seven years Jacob works for her, the seven he works again. She is also the only woman in the Hebrew Bible with a tomb that became a pilgrimage site in its own right. Rae, the clipped English form, has been given alone since the nineteenth century, and the ae spelling is doing plain work: it writes the long a in a position where a single letter would not, which is the same job it does in Mae and Rae.
Meaning
ewe, joined to grace
Rae is a short form of Rachel, Hebrew Rachel, a ewe. Anna is Hebrew Hannah, grace or favor. Both halves have settled meanings, which is unusual for a modern compound; the compound itself has none beyond the sum of them.

The Narda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Raeanna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Narda climbed just as high around 1961, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Narda's path sketches the road Raeanna is walking now.
Raeanna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Both halves have documented Hebrew meanings, which most compounds cannot offer.
- Three short forms, all of which are full names in their own right.
- Every sound in it is ordinary English.
- Rayanna, Reanna and Rhianna are all in use and close enough to be confused.
- Most people will shorten it to Rae or Anna within a week.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled between the first and second syllable.
