Where it comes from

Our story of Narda

For five hundred years the unicorn horns in European treasuries were narwhal tusks. Norse traders in Greenland and Iceland had access to the animal and did not explain where the horns came from; the tusks reached the courts of Europe as the horn of the unicorn, which was believed to detect and neutralize poison and was therefore worth many times its weight in gold. Queen Elizabeth was given one valued at the price of a castle. The tusk itself is a left canine tooth that grows straight out through the lip, spiralling always to the left, and no fully convincing explanation of what it is for has been agreed: a sensory organ, a weapon, a display of rank. The trade collapsed only when naturalists established what the animal was.

It may shorten Leonarda or Bernarda, either of which produces this ending; it may clip the plant name Nardo; or it may be an American build. Nothing in the record separates the three.

Narda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1961, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Narda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
What to consider
  • Nardia, Nelda and Narda will all be confused in speech.
  • It reads as a short form, so people will ask what it stands for.
  • Which of the three origins applies is not recorded.
