Radames was invented for an opera. He is the Egyptian captain in Verdi's Aida, and the name, like Amneris and Amonasro beside it, was made up for the libretto. It had no life at all before the stage, and a very real one afterward.

Where it comes from

The story of Radames

Aida is set in an ancient Egypt assembled by nineteenth-century Europeans, and the names in it were built to sound Egyptian rather than to be Egyptian. No papyrus holds a Radames. Amneris and Amonasro are inventions of the same evening. What happened next is the interesting part. The opera toured relentlessly through Italy, Spain and Latin America for a century, and out of a cast of manufactured names two of them walked off the stage and became real. Aida is now a common given name. Radames followed it into Spanish-speaking households, especially in the Caribbean, where it has been handed from grandfather to grandson for generations: a name with no ancestors and a great many descendants.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no meaning to give. The name was constructed for a libretto rather than borrowed from Egyptian, Greek or Latin, and sources that offer an Egyptian translation are working backward from the sound.

Pronouncing Radames

rah-dah-MESS

In Spanish the stress falls on the final syllable and an accent marks it, as Radamés. American records generally drop the accent, and English speakers then guess at RAD-uh-meez, which is worth heading off early.

Radames sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 30 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Radames sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a clear documented origin, which is unusual for an invented name: the libretto exists, the premiere is dated, and the whole story can be checked.
  • It is firmly established in Spanish-speaking communities, so it is unusual without being unmoored.
  • Three open syllables and no sound that either Spanish or English finds difficult.
What to consider
  • English speakers will stress the wrong syllable until told, and the accent that would have told them is usually missing from American paperwork.
  • The character it comes from ends the opera sealed alive in a vault, which is a heavy piece of luggage in a household that knows the plot.
  • Outside Spanish-speaking and opera-going circles the name needs explaining, and it needs it every time.
