Racheal
Feminine · “ewe”
Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, was given her sister instead, and worked seven more. Genesis says the first seven seemed to him like a few days because of the love he had for her — which is one of the few sentences in the Hebrew Bible that reads like a novel. Racheal is the commonest transposition in American records: the a and the e simply change places.

The story of Racheal
Rachel is the younger of the two sisters Jacob marries and the mother of Joseph and Benjamin; her tomb outside Bethlehem has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. The name stayed in continuous Jewish use and entered English with the Reformation. It became a very widely given American name in the 1970s and 1980s, and once a name is that common the misspellings become numerous enough to appear in the statistics as names of their own. Racheal is the leading example: two letters swapped, nothing audible changed.
Meaning
ewe
From the Hebrew rachel, a ewe — a female sheep. It is a shepherd's name in a shepherd's story: Rachel is introduced watering her father's flock, which is where Jacob meets her. The plainness of the word is part of the point.

Line the two peaks up, and Carroll's path sketches the road Racheal is walking now.
