Corryn

Feminine · “maiden”

#13208 in the U.S.given to only a few children a year

The doubled r in Corryn does one thing: it keeps the first vowel short. English readers take a single consonant after a vowel as a signal to lengthen it — compare coral and corral — so Coryn and Corryn are not read quite the same way on sight. Behind both is a Greek poet who, according to one ancient writer, beat Pindar in competition five separate times.

Where it comes from

The story of Corryn

Corinna of Tanagra wrote in Boeotia, and Pausanias reports that she defeated Pindar at Thebes five times, adding sourly that it was because she wrote in the local dialect and was very good-looking. Almost none of her work survives. The name passed into Latin poetry — it is the woman Ovid addresses in the Amores — and then into English through the Renaissance. Its modern American forms multiply the spellings freely, and this one uses both a doubled r and a y, which is two decisions where most versions make one.

Meaning

maiden

From the Greek korē, a girl or a maiden, through the poetic name Korinna. The same word was the title used for Persephone in her cult, where naming her directly was avoided — so the plainest word for a young woman doubled as the name of a goddess nobody wanted to name.

About 1 girl in 26,788 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Corryn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Cory and Rynn are both usable and sound nothing alike.
  • The Greek word behind it is documented and has an unexpectedly good story attached.
  • Six letters, two syllables, and readable on sight.
What to consider
  • Coryn, Corynn, Corin and Corrin all compete, and this is the version with two changes at once.
  • The stress is unsettled between the front and the back.
  • It will be heard as Corinne or Corinna by anyone not listening closely.
