Kelsey came to America as an English surname and moved to the front of the name in the twentieth century, arriving first for boys and then, from the 1970s, overwhelmingly for girls — a crossing it made faster than most. Once it was widely given the spellings multiplied, and American naming reached for its standard tool for marking a daughter's version: an i where a y or an ey would be.
