Kanika
Feminine · “a small particle”
In Sanskrit, kanika is the smallest thing there is. The word means a grain, a particle, an atom — the least amount of something that can still be that something — and it is used in philosophical writing as well as in ordinary speech. It is also, quite separately, exactly the shape of a name American naming was producing in the 1970s, and both are present in the record.

The story of Kanika
Sanskrit vocabulary supplies a great deal of modern Indian naming, and words for small precious things — a grain, a spark, a drop — are used freely. Kanika belongs to that stock and traveled with Indian families. At almost exactly the same moment, and entirely independently, American naming was building women's names on a similar shape, particularly in African American communities, and the record from the 1970s contains both populations under one spelling. It is a coincidence of sound, and an unusually neat one.

a small particle; an atom
The Sanskrit kanika means a tiny grain or particle, from a root meaning small. It is a real word and a real name in India. Separately, American naming in the 1970s produced a family of women's names on the -ika and -eeka endings, and some children with this spelling belong to that family rather than to the Sanskrit one. The record cannot separate them.

The Leonarda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kanika's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leonarda climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leonarda's path sketches the road Kanika is walking now.
Kanika sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The Sanskrit meaning is precise, small and rather lovely, and it takes one sentence to give.
- Nika is available as a short form and is a standing name of its own.
- Three open syllables that survive any accent intact.
- It reads as familiar to American ears while being genuinely uncommon.
- Two unrelated traditions meet at the spelling, so the meaning cannot be stated flatly.
- Kanica, Konika and Kaneka all appear, so the spelling has to be given.
- The stress placement differs between American and Indian speakers.
