Leonarda
Feminine · “lion-strong”
Leonard means lion-strong, and northern Europe had no lions. The Germanic peoples who built this name out of two of their own words had borrowed the first one from Latin, because the animal was something they had heard about rather than seen, and it turns up in a great many of their names all the same.

The story of Leonarda
Saint Leonard is the patron of prisoners, and his shrine in central France was hung with the chains of men who had been released. The story is that he asked a Frankish king for the right to free any prisoner he visited, and got it; whether that happened or not, the cult was enormous in the Middle Ages, and freed captives really did leave their irons at Noblac. Crusaders taken and ransomed came home and named churches after him, which is how a local French saint ended up with dedications from Ireland to Bavaria.
Meaning
lion-strong
The compound is Germanic in structure and half-Latin in vocabulary: the word for a lion came south to north with the Romans, and Germanic name-makers took it up enthusiastically because it fitted their taste for names about strength and fierce animals. The feminine ending is Latin and Italian. Leonarda is the standard form in Italy and Spain and has never been common in English.
