Where it comes from

Our story of Quintez

Quinsy is an abscess beside the tonsil, and its name has nothing to do with five. The Greek is kynanche, from the words for a dog and for throttling — the dog-strangler, because the swelling closes the throat and because a collar tightened on a dog does the same thing. Latin took it as cynanche, medieval Latin wore it to quinancia, and English arrived at quinsy, at which point the dog had vanished from view entirely. The condition was genuinely dangerous before antibiotics and killed people regularly; George Washington's final illness was probably a related one. The medical name now is peritonsillar abscess, which is accurate and says nothing about dogs, and quinsy survives mostly in older writing and in the way older people describe a bad throat.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is the Roman first name built on the word for fifth. The ending resembles the Spanish patronymic suffix that closes Martinez and Rodriguez, but that suffix attaches to a father's name, not to a numeral, so the combination is not Spanish. Nothing records the join.

Pronouncing Quintez

kwin-TEZ

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The qu is said kw, as it is in every English word that has it, rather than as the bare k Spanish would give.

Fashion outlook

Quintez sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • The spelling is phonetic by English rules and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Quintes, Quentez and Quinteze are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The ending looks Spanish and is not used that way in Spanish.
  • Only the front carries a meaning, and it is a number.
