Quinton
Masculine · “Either "fifth" or "queen's estate”
Quinton is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 31,623 boys against 42 girls since 1880.
Quinton carries a letter almost no one else on the class list has, and it earns it: the Q leads, the two syllables land evenly, and the whole thing is spelled the way it sounds. Behind it stand a Roman number-name that traveled through Gaul and northern France, and a scattering of English villages whose names end the same way. It has been on American records since the early twentieth century and has never dropped off.

The story of Quinton
Quintus was one of the ordinary Roman number-names, and Quintinus was its affectionate form. It reached northern Gaul with Saint Quentin, a third-century Roman missionary martyred in Picardy, whose burial place grew into the town of Saint-Quentin — and from that town the name spread through medieval France as Quentin. The Normans carried it to England, where it settled as both a first name and a surname, and where it collided with the unrelated English place name Quinton, "queen's estate". The -ton spelling crossed to America and has held steady there for over a century, strongest in Texas, California and Ohio.

Either "fifth" or "queen's estate"
Two real roads meet at this spelling. Through Quentin it goes back to Latin Quintinus, a diminutive of Quintus, "fifth" — a Roman name often given to a fifth child. As an English surname and place name, Quinton comes from Old English cwēn and tūn, "queen's estate or settlement", the source of villages called Quinton in Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. Neither reading cancels the other; most American bearers arrive by way of Quentin.

The Lionel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Quinton's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lionel climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lionel's path sketches the road Quinton is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled phonetically — a reader who has never seen it will still say it correctly on the first try.
- Shortens to Quinn, a name so well established on its own that the nickname needs no explanation.
- Over a century of unbroken use in American records, so it is familiar without being a name children share.
- Quentin is the older and more widely known spelling, so expect a lifetime of gentle corrections — on forms, in emails, at the coffee counter.
- Quinn now goes to girls at least as often as boys in the US. The full name reads clearly as a boy's name; the short form is more open, which some families like and others would rather avoid.
- It is most strongly represented among adults rather than young children, so it may read as belonging to a particular stretch of years — though it has been on the charts long enough that it never sounds unfamiliar.
