Beaux is the French word for handsome dressed in its plural spelling, and that silent x lands it squarely in the company of the Louisiana surnames — Boudreaux, Thibodeaux, Robicheaux — where French endings survived generations of English speech. In the mouth it is a single open vowel, the shortest a name can reasonably get, and the states where it turns up most are exactly the ones with the deepest French place-names.

How old is the name Beaux?

Beaux first appears in US birth records in 1977 — 48 years ago. The typical Beaux is a kid of about 6 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,500 people named Beaux are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Beaux

Latin bellus, 'pretty', became French beau, and English borrowed the word outright in the eighteenth century to mean a suitor or a well-dressed man — the sense preserved in the Regency dandy George Bryan 'Beau' Brummell, whose nickname is why English speakers still hear the word at all. From nickname it moved to given name, most readily in the American South. The -x spelling belongs to a separate tradition: French Louisiana, where -eaux and -aux endings held on in family names long after the French was gone. Beaux is what happens when the short English name is written in the Louisiana manner, and the record bears that out in the states where it appears most.

Meaning

handsome, beautiful

The root is French beau, from Latin bellus, 'pretty, handsome'. The -x is the ordinary French plural ending, so as French the written word means 'handsome ones'; as a name it functions simply as an alternate spelling of Beau.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and one vowel sound — nothing to mispronounce once heard, and no competing stress pattern.
  • The base spelling Beau is already familiar to American ears, so the name itself is never explained, only the ending.
  • The -x ending matches a real and recognizable Louisiana naming tradition rather than being invented from nothing.
  • Comes with a ready-made short form, Beau, that stands on its own as a full given name.
What to consider
  • The silent x will need spelling out for life. Most people who hear the name will write Beau, and forms, coaches and coffee cups will default to it.
  • In French the -x is a plural ending, so a French speaker reads the written word as 'handsome ones'. Worth knowing rather than worrying about.
  • The name's rise is very recent and very sharp, which tends to date a cohort — a Beaux will read as of his own moment, the way certain names instantly signal a decade.
  • He is unlikely to meet another. That means no surname initial in class, and also no one else who already knows how to spell it.
