The story of Quenton
Saint Quentin, a third-century Roman missionary martyred in Gaul, gave his name to the town of Saint-Quentin in Picardy, and the Norman Conquest carried the name to England as a given name and a surname. It stayed rare in English until the twentieth century. The American figures for Quenton peak in 1990, part of a wave in which -on endings were substituted for -in and -en across many names at once: Braden for Bradin, Camron for Cameron, Quenton for Quentin. What is unusual here is that the number sense survived intact for two thousand years while nobody using the name was a fifth child.
Meaning
Latin "fifth"
From Quintinus, a diminutive of Quintus, from quintus, fifth. Roman families used ordinal praenomina for sons in order of birth, and several of them survived antiquity as ordinary names — Quintus through Quintin and Quentin, Sextus barely, Octavius through Octavio and Octavia, Decimus scarcely at all. The -on spelling of Quenton is American and carries no separate meaning; the historical spellings are Quintin and Quentin.
