Where it comes from

Our story of Quintavious

Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Octavius, Decimus: fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, tenth. Roman families really did name sons by birth order, and then kept using the names after the arithmetic stopped working — a man called Sextus was frequently not the sixth of anything, because the name had been in the family and was reused. Within a few generations the numbers were simply names, as meaningless as any others, which is what happens to every descriptive naming system given enough time. American naming reached for the sound of those names without the system, and built something with a Latin front, a Latin-looking ending and no Latin grammar holding it together.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is the Latin word for fifth, which was a genuine Roman first name. The ending is an American suffix modeled on Latin names rather than taken from one. The compound is modern and means nothing in Latin.

Fashion outlook

Quintavious sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is long, formal-sounding and almost certainly unique in any room.
  • It shortens in two directions, both of them usable.
  • The sounds are all ordinary English.
What to consider
  • Four syllables will be cut down immediately in any classroom.
  • It looks Latin and is not, which somebody will eventually point out.
  • There is no meaning in the compound, only in the front.
