Where it comes from

The story of Quint

After Hannibal destroyed two Roman armies in successive years, Rome appointed Quintus Fabius Maximus dictator, and he adopted a strategy nobody liked: shadow the enemy, hold the high ground, cut off foragers, refuse every offer of battle. It was humiliating, it was unpopular, his own second-in-command was given equal command as a rebuke, and the nickname Cunctator, the delayer, was originally an insult. Then the Romans ignored him, met Hannibal at Cannae and lost fifty thousand men in an afternoon, after which the strategy looked considerably better and the nickname became an honorific. Two thousand years later a group of English socialists named themselves after him to signal that they intended to win by patience rather than revolution, and the word Fabian has meant that ever since.

Meaning

fifth

One of a small set of Roman first names built on numbers. What they originally counted is not recoverable — a month of birth and a position among siblings have both been proposed — and by the time the names are well attested they were simply hereditary.

Fashion outlook

Quint sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable is short, clear and carries across a room.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it impossible to misspell after hearing it.
  • The meaning is documented and immediately understandable.
What to consider
  • Quinn and Quentin will both be written for it.
  • It reads as a shortened form even though it is complete.
  • A shark film gave one character the name and the association is a strong one.
