Where it comes from

Our story of Quenten

Saint-Quentin sits in Picardy on the Somme canal, and its position has cost it dearly. In the first war it was behind German lines for four years, was systematically stripped, and was almost entirely destroyed in the fighting of the final spring; the population was deported and returned to rubble. It was rebuilt, largely in art deco, which is why a medieval town looks the way it does. Then it was occupied again in the second war and bombed again. The basilica survived both, with visible damage, and the town's rebuilt center is now a listed example of interwar reconstruction, which is a peculiar sort of distinction to have earned.

Fashion outlook

Quenten sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Quen and Quinn are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so it is never a puzzle to say.
  • It is read correctly at first sight even by people who have not seen this spelling.
What to consider
  • Quentin and Quinten are both commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • The changed letter cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • No reason for it is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks why.
