Quan
Masculine
Quan is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,425 boys against 39 girls since 1880.
Quan on its own peaks in 1982, which is before the American -quan ending existed. That timing matters: it suggests the standalone name came first and the suffix was cut from it, rather than the other way round, and it points at a Vietnamese and Chinese source.

The story of Quan
Vietnamese arrived in the United States in very large numbers after 1975, and Vietnamese names entered American records immediately, stripped of their diacritics. Quan is among them, and its American peak in 1982 sits exactly where that arrival would put it. The -quan ending of Daquan, Shaquan and Laquan appears in the records from the mid-1980s, after this name rather than before it, which is the sequence you would expect if a familiar new sound were being reused as a naming element. The connection has not been documented and should be treated as a plausible account rather than a settled one.

Not established
Vietnamese Quan, written with diacritics that English records drop, has several meanings depending on the tone and the character, including an official and an army. Chinese Guan, formerly romanised Kuan, is a common surname and appears in Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. The American -quan naming suffix has no documented source, and this standalone name may be its origin rather than its product.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rudell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Quan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rudell climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rudell's path sketches the road Quan is walking now.
Quan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable and four letters, impossible to misspell.
- Genuine Vietnamese and Chinese sources available behind it.
- Short, strong and immediately memorable.
- The Vietnamese tone and diacritics are lost in English spelling.
- It is also the ending of a large family of unrelated American names.
- Kwan and Quan both circulate as transliterations.
