The story of Pinchus
Phinehas is a grandson of Aaron in the book of Numbers, and his name is one of several in the priestly family — Moses, Hophni, Merari — that scholars trace to Egyptian rather than Hebrew. The name stayed in continuous Jewish use, and Ashkenazi Hebrew shifted its vowels to give Pinchus and Pinchas. It is very widely used in Hasidic communities, often paired with the Yiddish name Shraga or Hirsch.

the Nubian, the dark-skinned one
The most widely accepted reading takes the name from Egyptian pa-nehasi, the Nubian, which fits a family the biblical text places in Egypt. A traditional Hebrew reading takes it as mouth of brass or serpent's mouth; that is a later interpretation of the Hebrew letters rather than an etymology.

The Hammad test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Pinchus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hammad climbed just as high around 2002, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hammad's path sketches the road Pinchus is walking now.
Pinchus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented record from the biblical text to the present with no break in use.
- Pinny is a warm short form already in universal community use.
- The Egyptian origin is a genuinely interesting piece of history.
- The middle consonant does not exist in English and will be flattened to a k.
- Pinchas, Pinchus and Pinchos are all used and different branches may prefer different ones.
- It is very strongly marked as a community name, which is the intention in the families that use it.
