The story of Peighton
The Peyton family were Suffolk gentry and the surname traveled to Virginia early; Peyton Randolph presided over the First Continental Congress in 1774. As a given name Peyton was a boys' name in the American South through the twentieth century, and Peyton Manning kept it there. It crossed to girls in the 1990s, in the same movement that gave daughters Riley, Reagan and Harper, and the girls' use overtook the boys' by 2000. The respellings followed: Payton, Peighton, Paityn and Payten all appear, with Peighton peaking in 2010.
Meaning
Pæga's farmstead
From the Old English personal name Pæga with tūn, a farmstead or settlement — the same tūn behind thousands of English place names. Peyton in Essex and Payton in Northamptonshire both come from it. The reading is settled. The -eigh spelling is an American convention borrowed from Leigh and Haleigh and has no basis in the place name.

Peighton's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenine climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jenine's path sketches the road Peighton is walking now.
