Where it comes from

The story of Paizlee

The teardrop figure is Persian and Indian long before it is Scottish, and it reached Britain on Kashmiri shawls that were far too expensive for most buyers. The weavers of Paisley learned to copy them, and by the middle of the nineteenth century the town was producing the design in such volume that English-speaking countries began calling the pattern by the town's name. The town became a girls' name in the United States in the two-thousands, and the respellings arrived at once: Paislee, Paizley, Paizlee and Payslee all write one sound.

Meaningscholars disagree

the Scottish town, and the pattern named after it

The town's own name is not settled. A Brythonic word related to basilica, meaning a church, is the reading most often given, from the Latin term for a major church. Other accounts propose a Gaelic word for a pasture. The pattern's name is not in doubt: it comes from the town, which wove the design at scale.

Paizlee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2015, with 101 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Paizlee went to 28 girls in 2025, but Paislee and Payslee are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 467, which makes it the 538th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,220 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,442 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 57,402 for Paizlee itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It names a real place and a real pattern, both of which can be shown to a child.
  • The sound is entirely familiar in English-speaking countries.
  • Lee works as a short form and reads more plainly than the full name.
What to consider
  • Paisley is the standard spelling by a wide margin and this one will be corrected constantly.
  • At least four spellings of the same sound are in circulation.
  • The name is strongly of the last two decades and will date accordingly.
