The story of Riva
Rivka is the Hebrew name of Isaac's wife, and Yiddish clipped it to Riva and Rivka alike. It was widely used among Ashkenazi families and reached America with Jewish emigration in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Italian riva is a separate word — Riva del Garda is a lakeside town — and Italian families have used it too. Both lines appear in American records.

Not established
Rebecca's own meaning is genuinely unsettled: readings include a snare or a tie, from a root for binding, and a knotted cord. The Italian riva, a shore, is from Latin ripa and is unrelated. Both feed the modern name.

The Donalee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Riva's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Donalee climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Donalee's path sketches the road Riva is walking now.
Riva sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Rebecca stands behind it as a fuller formal option with a very long history.
- Four letters and two syllables, very quick to write.
- Two documented traditions, Jewish and Italian, both real.
- Rebecca's own meaning is genuinely unsettled, so the question has no clean answer.
- Riva, Rivka and Reva are all in use and get confused.
- It is close to Rita and Reva in an American ear.
