The -ton at the end of a thousand English surnames is the word town. Old English tun meant an enclosure and then a farmstead, and it is the commonest ending in English place names: Brighton, Preston, Paxton, Peyton. Paiton is a farm in Suffolk, several centuries and one respelling later.

Where it comes from

The story of Paiton

Tun began as a fence and became the ground inside it, then the farm, then the settlement, and finally the English word town, which is why so many English places end in it. Peyton is one of those places, in Suffolk, and it produced a family name in the ordinary way. The name became widely visible in America for a quite separate reason: a 1956 novel called Peyton Place, about the things a small New England town keeps quiet, was one of the biggest sellers of the century and ran for years as a television series, which put the two words in front of everyone. Peyton then went to girls in the 1990s, and Paiton, Payton and Paityn followed as the sound was rewritten.

Meaning

Paega's farm

From the English place name Peyton, which is Old English: a personal name, Paega, with tun, an enclosure or farmstead. The place gave a surname, the surname gave a first name, and the first name was then respelled by ear. The word tun is the direct ancestor of town.

Paiton sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 109 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Paiton went to 8 girls in 2025, but Payton is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 709, which makes it the 409th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,508 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,267 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Paiton itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented English place behind it, which can be found on a map.
  • Two syllables that everyone says correctly on first sight.
  • It serves either child, and the records show both.
What to consider
  • Peyton and Payton are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected constantly.
  • Peyton Place is still a phrase for a scandalous small town, and older readers will hear it.
  • The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper, which reverses the name's own history.
