Where it comes from

The story of Christianne

English records from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century are full of women called Christian, spelled exactly as the men's name is now, and the usage was so ordinary that nobody remarked on it. It faded in England around the time that Christiana and Christina became available as explicitly feminine forms, and it survived longest in Scotland, where it was still being given to daughters into the nineteenth century. Meanwhile Denmark was numbering kings with it, ten of them, which fixed the name as masculine across Scandinavia and Germany. Any English speaker who assumes the name is naturally one sex or the other is generalizing from about two hundred years of one country's practice.

Meaning

a Christian

From the Latin word for a follower of Christ, used as a personal name from the early centuries of the church. The reading is settled everywhere the name is used. The doubled n and the final e are both French orthographic conventions and neither is audible; they mark the name as the French feminine rather than the English or Scandinavian masculine.

How the name formed

  1. The Latin word for a Christian, used as a name
  2. A woman's name in medieval England and Scotland
  3. A royal man's name across Scandinavia
  4. Christianne as the French feminine with an added n

Fashion outlook

Christianne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is clear, universal and needs no explaining.
  • Chris is available immediately and works anywhere in the world.
  • It is a genuine French form rather than an English respelling of one.
What to consider
  • The final e is pronounced by some and silent by others, which changes the syllable count.
  • It will be written Christiane or Christina by nearly everybody who hears it.
  • The base name reads male in Scandinavia and Germany.
