Paetyn
Feminine · “Paega's farm”
Paetyn is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,087 girls against 11 boys since 1880.
The ae in this spelling is a resurrection. English used to have a letter for it — the character ash, written as an a and an e fused together, with its own sound and its own rune — and dropped it after the Norman conquest. It has come back as pure decoration, seven hundred years later.

The story of Paetyn
Old English had four letters modern English does not: thorn and eth for the two th sounds, wynn for w, and ash for the vowel in cat. Ash was a fused ae and it carried a real sound, distinct from both letters it was made of. Norman scribes writing English used the Latin alphabet they knew, the extra letters fell out of use over the next few centuries, and the sound was written with a plain a. Latin loanwords later brought the ae combination back into English spelling — Caesar, aegis, encyclopedia — and English has spent four hundred years simplifying those to e. Modern naming has now put the digraph back on names that never had it, for the look of the thing.

The Kalen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Paetyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kalen climbed just as high around 1994, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kalen's path sketches the road Paetyn is walking now.
Paetyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented English place behind it that can be found on a map.
- Two syllables that everyone says correctly on first hearing.
- It serves either child, and the records show both.
- At least five spellings share this sound and Peyton is much commoner than any of them.
- Neither the ae nor the yn changes the pronunciation, so the whole cost is paid for appearance.
- The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
