The story of Kalen
Two names collided in English. In the Highlands, Cailean was a Clan Campbell name of long standing, from cuilean, a whelp or young hound, and the chief of the Campbells is still called Mac Cailein Mor. In medieval France and England, Colin was one of the standard familiar forms of Nicolas, as ordinary a name as Jack, and it turns up in that sense throughout Middle English literature. The two are entirely separate in origin and identical in modern spelling, so almost every Colin in the English-speaking world has an ancestry that cannot be determined from the name alone. The modern American respellings, Kalen, Kaylen and Calen, sit on top of both, and the female use is a small twentieth-century stream that neither original supports.
