Owens
Masculine · “son of Owen”
Wales has very few surnames and a great many people carrying each one. The reason is timing: Wales kept patronymics, where a man was son of his father and nothing more, for centuries after England fixed hereditary surnames, and when it finally froze them it froze a tiny pool of first names.

The story of Owens
Welsh naming used ap, son of, so a man was Dafydd ap Ieuan ap Rhys, a chain rather than a surname. English administration required fixed surnames, and Wales adopted them under pressure between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, freezing whichever father's name happened to be current; the ap collapsed into a final s or was absorbed, giving Prichard from ap Richard and Bowen from ab Owen. Because the pool of Welsh first names in use was small, the resulting surnames are few and enormously common. Owens crossed to America and became a given name in the nineteenth century, with a best year of 1890.
Meaningscholars disagree
son of Owen, from a name possibly meaning well-born
Owen is the anglicized Welsh Owain, whose origin is disputed: a borrowing of Latin Eugenius, well-born, is the most-cited route, and a native Celtic derivation is also proposed. The final s is the Welsh genitive marker meaning son of, the same s in Jones, Davies, Williams and Evans. It is a reduction of the earlier ap or ab, son of.
