Where it comes from

The story of Ottis

Ode and Otes were ordinary Norman names in England after 1066 and produced the surnames Otis, Oates and Ottey. Otis crossed to America early and became a New England surname of some standing; James Otis was a leading Massachusetts patriot before the Revolution, and Elisha Otis invented the safety elevator, which put the surname on lift plates worldwide. Its use as a given name follows the American surname habit of the nineteenth century, and the doubled-t spelling belongs to the same period, when American orthography for names was much less standardized than it later became. Otis Redding, born in 1941, gave the single-t spelling a strong second life.

Meaning

wealth, riches

The Germanic element aud or od means wealth, prosperity and inherited property, and it gives the names Otto, Odo, Otis and the first half of Audrey. Otis reached English as a surname, formed from the medieval given name Ode or Otes, which is the Norman form of the same element. So the name is a surname built on a personal name built on a word for wealth. The derivation is settled at each step.

Ottis sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 115 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ottis went to 15 boys in 2025, but Otis is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 437, which makes it the 541st most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,320 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 3,909 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 113,872 for Ottis itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a single positive word with a clean Germanic derivation.
  • The sound is familiar through Otis, so only the spelling is unusual.
  • It has a documented nineteenth-century American history.
What to consider
  • Otis is far the more common spelling and hers will be written that way.
  • The doubled t may pull the first vowel short for readers meeting it cold.
  • Its American curve is turn-of-the-century, which places a bearer's generation.
