The story of Osmin
Conversion did not clear out the pagan vocabulary in Germanic naming; it simply stopped anyone noticing. Os-, the word for a god of the old religion, remained one of the most productive first elements in Old English and Old Norse naming right through the Christian centuries, and Oswald and Oswin were saints. The name Osmund traveled with the Normans and produced forms across Europe. Osmin is a Central American form, used in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, and it also belongs to Mozart's 1782 opera, where Osmin is the overseer of a Turkish harem. Its best year in United States records is 1993.

protection of the gods
The Germanic element os or ans means a god, specifically one of the Aesir, and appears in Oswald, Osborn, Osbert and Osmund. Osmin is generally taken as a form of Osmund, from os plus mund, a hand and thence protection. A separate route makes the Central American Osmin a modern coinage; the Germanic reading is the better-supported one.

The Southern test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Osmin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Southern climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Southern's path sketches the road Osmin is walking now.
Osmin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
