The story of Oneida
The word took an extraordinary detour through American history. In the eighteen-forties a religious community founded itself in central New York, borrowed the local place name, and practiced a form of shared marriage that scandalised the state for three decades. When the community broke up its members reorganised what was left as a joint-stock company, and that company went on making tableware. For most of the twentieth century Oneida was the best-known silverware brand in America, sitting in kitchen drawers in millions of houses. So a word that began as a nation's name for itself passed through a utopian experiment and came out the other side as a cutlery label, which is about as strange a journey as an American word has taken.

the people of the standing stone
From the nation's own name for itself in its own language. The stone in question is a real feature of the tradition rather than a metaphor, and the nation has used the image on its own emblems.

Fashion outlook
Oneida sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is concrete, dignified and belongs to a living nation rather than a dead language.
- The rhythm is unusual and gives the name a shape few others have.
- It is completely distinctive without containing a difficult sound.
- It is the name of a nation and of a people still here, which is a serious thing to borrow.
- The silverware brand is the association most Americans will reach for first.
- The generation that used it is now very old, and the name carries that plainly.
