The story of Olga
Scandinavians moving down the river routes into what is now Ukraine and Russia brought their names with them, and Helga became Olga. Olga of Kiev, ruling as regent in the tenth century, converted to Christianity decades before her grandson made it the state religion; she is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox church and remembered in the chronicles for a series of extremely violent reprisals before that. The name has been continuously used across the Slavic world ever since, and reached America with Central and Eastern European migration.
Meaning
holy, blessed
From Old Norse heilagr, 'holy' or 'hallowed', through the Norse name Helga. The Slavic languages took it as Olga and kept the sense, which is why the name sat so easily with a Christian saint.

The trade-off
- Spelled identically across Russian, German, Spanish and Portuguese, which is unusually wide reach for four letters.
- Olya is a warm, well-established diminutive with a completely different sound from the full name.
- A documented tenth-century figure at the root of it, and a clear meaning that has not been contested.
- In American English it reads as strongly Eastern European, which is either the point of choosing it or a consideration.
- The saint at the center of the name's history is remembered for her revenge as much as for her conversion, and the chronicles do not soften it.
