The story of Omri
Omri seized the throne of Israel after a civil war, founded Samaria as his capital and established a dynasty that lasted four generations. The biblical account gives him only a few verses and a bad report, but Assyrian inscriptions call the kingdom bit-Humri, the house of Omri, long after his line ended — a measure of how large he loomed abroad. The name is used in modern Israel and appears in American records with Israeli families.

The meaning is not established. Readings from Hebrew have been offered — my sheaf, from a word for a bundle of grain, among them — and none is convincing. An Arabic connection to a root meaning life has also been proposed. The name may not be Hebrew in origin.

The Belal test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Omri's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Belal climbed just as high around 1990, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Belal's path sketches the road Omri is walking now.
Omri sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented historical figure attested in independent ancient records.
- Four letters and two syllables, very quick to write.
- Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
- The biblical text reports the king unfavourably, though history remembers him as effective.
- The stress differs between the Hebrew and English readings.
- The meaning is genuinely unknown, and the readings offered are guesses.
