Omega

Omega is a letter with an unglamorous name. In Greek it means, literally, big O — o mega — and it was called that to distinguish it from omicron, little o, because the two letters spelled different vowels and needed telling apart. Everything grand the word now carries came afterward, and most of it came from one sentence.

The story of Omega
Using the last letter as a name has a specific American history: it was given to a last child, the one after whom no more were expected, and the record shows it turning up alongside families with a great many children. That practice is old and quiet and has never had a name of its own. The other road is the Revelation verse, which makes Omega one of a small set of names taken from titles of God rather than from people — and, unlike most of those, it is used for daughters as well as sons, since a letter has no sex.
Meaning
the great O
Greek o mega is exactly what it says: the letter O, described as large. Omicron is o mikron, the small one. The Greeks were naming two spellings of related vowel sounds and used the plainest possible label. Because omega is the last letter of the alphabet it acquired the sense of the end or the final thing, and the Book of Revelation fixed that when it has God say I am the Alpha and the Omega — the beginning and the end. That is where the weight comes from, not from the letter.

The Rithvik test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Omega's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rithvik climbed just as high around 2000, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rithvik's path sketches the road Omega is walking now.
Omega sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Omega is headed
Omega should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Everyone knows the word, so it is never mispronounced and never misspelled.
- It goes to boys and girls both, and a letter carries no assumption of its own.
- It has a genuine Greek derivation and a genuine scriptural use, which is more than most word names have.
- The word means last, and that meaning is unavoidable — it will be remarked on, and by other children first.
- It is also a very well-known watch brand and a fatty acid on a supplement label, and both associations arrive unbidden.
- In some recent fiction the word has picked up a further set of associations about rank and hierarchy, and a school-age child will meet those.
