The story of Blane
Saint Blane founded a monastery at Dunblane in the sixth century, and the cathedral there carries his name; he is one of the early Scottish saints whose lives are recorded thinly and honored widely. The surname came from the place. It moved into American given names in the twentieth century, peaking mid-century, and Blane and Blayne are the shorter spellings.

The saint's name Blàán is generally read from Gaelic bla, yellow, with a diminutive — the fair-haired little one. A separate reading connects it to a word for thin. Neither is fully settled.

The Masao test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Blane's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Masao climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Masao's path sketches the road Blane is walking now.
