The story of Ollie
The long form behind most Ollies is Oliver, which arrived in English as the French Olivier — the name of Roland's steadfast companion in the Chanson de Roland, sung and copied across Europe from the eleventh and twelfth centuries onward. Olive and Olivia came down a parallel line, Olivia given a lasting push by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. English speakers have been clipping all of these to Ollie for generations, and American records show it registered as a full given name, not just a household nickname, from their earliest years. Northern Europe arrived at nearly the same word independently: Finnish Olli and Swedish Olle are short forms of Olavi and Olof.
