The name begins as Germanic Heimirich, which became Heinrich in German and was Latinized as Henricus in the medieval church and chancery. From that Latin form the Scandinavian languages drew Henrik, and it settled in as a royal and everyday name across Denmark, Norway and Sweden, with Henrik also becoming standard in Hungarian. It reached the United States with Scandinavian and German immigration, which is why the northern states with the deepest Nordic settlement still show it most strongly.
