The story of Rishi
The word ṛṣi belongs to Vedic Sanskrit, where it names the seers to whom the hymns of the Rigveda are attributed; Hindu tradition counts a group of them, the Saptarishi or seven sages, whose names recur across later texts. Unlike many ancient words, this one never went out of circulation — it survives as ordinary vocabulary in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Nepali, and at some point ordinary families began giving it to sons. It reached the United States and Britain with South Asian migration in the second half of the twentieth century, where the standard romanisation Rishi settled quickly and has barely wavered since.

RISH-ee
Two syllables, stress on the first, the vowel as in fish. Sanskrit begins the word with a vocalic ṛ that English has no equivalent for, so speakers of Indian languages may produce something closer to a brief rolled RRI-shee.
